Halifax Travel Guide

Why Visit Halifax

A hilltop citadel looms over Halifax, Nova Scotia's picturesque capital. There are plenty of reasons to visit Halifax in its own right, such as a gorgeous public garden and a waterfront boardwalk perfect for strolling. But it's also a gateway to other nearby hot spots such as Peggy's Cove and Cape Breton.

When to Visit Halifax

Most visitors plan Halifax travel in summer, when flowers are blooming and festival season is in full swing. Summer and early fall are also the best times for whale watching. In fall, crowds are lighter, the weather is cool, and foliage typically peaks in mid-October. Spring is often wet and muddy, while winter can be frigid.

Halifax Weather

Temperatures in Halifax rarely exceed a pleasant 80 degrees, even in July and August. Summer is also the driest time of year to visit Halifax. Average highs in spring and fall are only in the 40s and 50s, and snow is likely from December to March. Visitors should be prepared for fog—and for rapid shifts from sun to cloud—all year.
