Czech Republic

When To Go

Although tourist season lasts all year long, the busiest time for the Czech Republic is during the warm summer months. The winter can get busy in the ski areas. The shoulder season, with its smaller crowds and pleasant temperatures, can be an ideal time to visit.

high season: May to September
low season: December to February
shoulder season: March to April, October to November

Weather Information

The Czech Republic has four distinct seasons. The summer experiences the warmest temperatures and the greatest amount of rainfall. Winter can be bitterly cold, with temperatures reaching as low as 27 degrees in the city and 10 degrees in the mountains. The mountains also receive nearly 130 days of snow per year. Spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures, with an average high of 68 degrees in the fall and 60 degrees in the spring.

Crowd Information

Many festivals that bring crowds are held between the end of spring and beginning of autumn. July and August receive the highest amount of tourism, especially in Prague and the mountain resort areas.

Closure Information

Many museums, galleries, and castles have seasonal opening times and are most accessible from May through September.

When to Save

Prices for travel services depend on the season, region, and provider. In general, July and August tend to be the most expensive months to visit. However, many student accommodations—bottom-end lodgings that offer a cheaper alternative to nearby hotels—are open to visitors during school breaks. In the regions outside Prague, prices are usually lower during the low seasons and higher in the summer. At ski and mountain resorts, prices are higher from December to March. In Prague, seasonality doesn't affect prices as much.

When to Book

To get the lowest prices, it's generally best to book six months in advance or wait until the last minute. However, to ensure availability, it's always best to book well in advance for visits during the high season, public holidays, or for stays at one of the ski resorts during the winter. It's particularly wise to book hotels in advance during the high season, especially in Prague. Reasonably priced hotels are readily available during the low season.
