When To Go

With various outdoor activities, Portland, Maine, is a popular vacation destination throughout much of the year. Summer, especially along the beach, is the most popular time, as kids are out of school and the weather and ocean water is warm. The fall is a popular time to view foliage. Although winter can be a bit cold and snowy, many visitors find the low prices, indoor activities, and nearby mountain skiing attractive. Spring brings mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced prices, making it an ideal time for a leisurely visit.

high season: July to September
low season: January to April
shoulder season: May to June, October to December

Weather Information

Portland experiences four seasons, each enhanced by the coastal climate. The spring brings pleasant weather, with temperatures in the 40 to 50s. Summers see warmer weather, especially along the beaches, with temperatures ranging from 70 to 80 degrees. Fall temperatures drop into the 50s. The winter brings snow and temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees.

Crowd Information

With school vacations and warm beaches, mid-July through August tend to be the busiest times of the year.

Closure Information

Most hotels and shops remain open throughout the year. Some attractions, however, including historic homes and guided tours may close from mid-October through mid-May.

When to Save

Winter and spring tend to be the least expensive times to visit, while prices rise in the summer because of school vacations and beach weather and remain at that level through fall due to foliage. Reduced hotel prices are available from mid-October through mid-May. May through June is considered the "value season" when most activities are open, the crowds are smaller, and prices are still low.

When to Book

Visitors with flexible travel plans can take advantage of low last-minute airfares. However, those with a set schedule should book flights at least three weeks in advance to obtain lower prices and ensure availability, especially for travel during the high season. Last-minute lodging is available, but it's a good idea to book at least one month in advance. The Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Portland monitors last-minute availability and is a good resource for last-minute cancellations. Summer and fall sell out quickly, so book at least three months in advance to ensure availability.
