Idaho's capital city stands at the crossroads of history—literally. The Oregon Trail passed through the southern part of town, and tourists can still see the wheel ruts left by wagons on their way West. Visitors can also explore other historical points around the city, including the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial and the Old Idaho Penitentiary, a sandstone edifice that held prisoners from 1870 through 1973. The City of Trees also offers outdoor recreation on the Greenbelt, a path stretching more than 25 miles along the Boise River. And fans of the arts can find opera, ballet, theater, and the Boise Philharmonic at the acoustically perfect Morrison Center at Boise State University. Flights to Boise land at Boise Airport, located less than four miles from downtown.
