Delta Expands London Service, Adds Boston, Miami

Delta has jumped at an opportunity to add flights to London’s Heathrow Airport, and plans to launch flights from Boston and Miami next year. The airline will fly twice daily between Boston and London, and once a day from Miami. Flights are expected to begin March 27, pending government approval.

The slots became available following approval of the alliance between British Airways/Iberia and American. Both British Airways and American dominate transatlantic service into Heathrow, especially on the Boston and Miami routes. The E.U. and U.S. required the airlines to give up slots on these routes.

Niether Delta nor any of its SkyTeam partners serve the Boston or Miami routes. Presently, only British Airways and American fly from Miami to Heathrow.

American’s recently finalized an alliance agreement with British Airways and Iberia that allows greater codesharing between the three airlines, along with joint marketing and technological ventures and frequent flyer reciprocity.
