Delta bucks industry trend, adds new Mexico routes

While other airlines are backing away from Cancun and Cozumel because of hurricane-related damage, Delta announced this week it is expanding its Mexico service with two new routes to Cancun.

Small carrier USA 3000 told the Department of Transportation last week it is postponing the relaunch of its seasonal service to Cozumel from Detroit and skipping this winter season entirely. Likewise, Spirit, American, AirTran, and US Airways are also postponing service.

Not Delta. The bankrupt carrier instead moved forward with plans to launch service to Cancun from Boston and Washington, D.C. Last fall, the airline announced the largest expansion into Mexico in its history as part of an overall strategy to target international routes with less competition from domestic low-cost carriers.

I like this move by Delta and I’m hoping it pays off; the Mayan Riviera resort towns can use an influx of tourism dollars now more than ever.
