Daily Daydream: Ulusaba Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Does the phrase “billionaire’s private game reserve” conjure up images of The Most Dangerous Game? Fear not, the only hunting done on Ulusaba is of the photo safari variety. Trade in the crowds of people common at some other reserves for crowds of animals: Ulusaba only has 21 rooms and suites, so guests are limited, but the animals are not—this is one of the best places in the world to see the “Big Five” game (lion, African elephant, cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros).

Owned by mogul Richard Branson, Ulusaba is exclusive and priced to match, although it comes with luxury perks. In addition to accommodation, a stay at the reserve includes all meals and drinks (including fine Champagnes), twice-daily game drives, and a daily safari walk.

Where is it? Just outside of Kruger National Park in South Africa, less than an hour-and-a-half flight from Johannesburg.

Where should I stay? You’ll have to shell out for lodging on the reserve to visit here. Prices start around $590 per night, although that includes safaris, so it’s really a bargain, right? Or go all out and stay in a Cliff Lodge (pictured above), which features amazing views and a private pool for around $1,500 a night.

What else should I know? The reserve aims to employ local workers, and also has a charitable branch, “Pride ‘n Purpose” which works to help the communities around Ulusaba.

Who’s it for? Photographers, animal-lovers, billionaires.
