I am incredibly terrified of jellyfish, so I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this lake before—in my nightmares. But what better way to conquer a fear of jellyfish than through immersion therapy at Jellyfish Lake? This isolated lake in Palau is teeming with jellyfish—but they’re completely harmless! The creatures have evolved to the point where their sting is harmless to humans, so when you dive in and flail around in a panic after you find yourself in a cloud of jellyfish, they won’t hurt you.

Even if you don’t want to jump in, the view from the shores is worth the visit. You can watch the jellies perform their daily migration, following the sun: They need the solar rays for survival.

If you’re still too freaked out or need a creepy-crawly break, there are other lakes and plenty of forest to explore on the island.

Where is it? Eil Malk Island, Palau. Fly to Koror Island (check prices) and catch a boat to the lake.

Where to Stay? Back on Koror, in your own private bungalow at The Carolines Resort. (I was only a little swayed by the name, promise.) Here, you’ll have access to the only private beach in Koror, plus a swimming pool and tennis courts.

What Else Should I Know? Expect to pay around $35 to enter the lake.
