Daily Daydream: Jardin Majorelle, Morocco

After the hustle, bustle, and unrelenting heat of Marrakech, the Majorelle Gardens are a true oasis. These botanical gardens look like something out of a painting, which is probably because they were built by an artist—painter Jacques Majorelle. If you detect a touch of fashion in the colors that grow there, that’s from the hand of designer Yves Saint Laurent, who (along with his partner) bought and restored the gardens in 1980.

The lush gardens are full of rare plants, water features, and plenty of shady spots to hide under and escape the Moroccan sun. Butterflies and birds flit amoung the plants—including a number of species that are unique to North Africa.

Where is it? Marrakech, Morocco.

Where to stay? Stay at the Riad and Spa Esprit du Maroc and you can hop from oasis to oasis. This luxury resort is in the center of Marrakech, and is within walking distance of the gardens. The Riad’s private pool will help you cool off after strolling around the gardens.

What else should I know? You’ll notice distinct pops of a vibrant blue shade throughout the gardens—this color is actually called Majorelle Blue, and it was trademarked by the gardens’ designer.

Who’s it for? Artists, fashionistas, amateur botanists, and bird watchers.
