Delta Puts the ‘Premium’ In Premium Economy

Delta’s take on premium economy, Comfort+, is in store for a privacy upgrade: partitions separating the block of more spacious seats from the rest of the coach-class cabin.

According to Bloomberg, Delta will begin installing the cabin-defining panels on domestic aircraft, pending regulatory approval. The airline is also considering equipping its international fleet with the partitions, but hasn’t yet decided whether to proceed.

Due no doubt in part to the ever-more cramped conditions in regular coach, premium economy is increasingly viewed as a viable option for price-sensitive flyers looking for a modicum of extra comfort. In addition to extra legroom, Delta’s Comfort+ features priority boarding, dedicated overhead storage, free drinks, and expanded complimentary inflight entertainment.

Currently, Comfort+ must be booked as an add-on to regular economy bookings. But beginning on May 16, 2016, Comfort+ will be bookable directly, via Delta’s own booking apps as well as at least some online travel agencies and other travel distributors.

Since prices for Comfort+ vary according to route and demand, Delta customers will be confronted with the same question each and every time they book their flights: Is the extra comfort worth the extra cost?
