Wanna Visit N. Korea? There’s an App for That

“Ever wondered what it’s like to travel to the DPRK — one of the most isolated states in the world? With the App you’ll see for yourself what travelling in North Korea is really like.”

That’s the pitch for the newly released North Korea Travel app, available for both iOS and Android devices and priced 99 cents.

The app bills itself as “the most comprehensive guide to North Korea travel that has ever been developed” — a claim not likely to be disputed anytime soon. The country currently hosts just 6,000 foreign visitors a year, and tourism isn’t expected to increase significantly so long as the notoriously volatile Kim Jong-un remains in power.

The app features information on 350 locations within the country, including the Rajin Zoo, which at one point housed three ducks, one turkey, a few foxes, and a drawing of a monkey.

There are also more than 1,000 photos of North Korea, quite a remarkable trove considering the country’s secretive ways and restrictive access.

Helpfully — and tellingly — the app includes an offline mode, because “it’s rare for tourists to have Internet access while traveling in North Korea.”

Although the app is nominally geared for adventure-seekers, it may establish its biggest user base with armchair travelers, who place safety and comfort above novelty and danger.
