Premium travel cards underwent major refreshes in 2025. The American Express Platinum Card jumped from $695 to $895 while adding $1,400 in statement credits. The Chase Sapphire Reserve hit $795 with new hotel credits. Capital One Venture X maintained its $395 fee but eliminated free guest lounge access starting February 1, 2026.

The math got more complicated. Some benefits got more generous. Whether cards deliver value depends entirely on matching their perks to your actual spending patterns.

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve — $795

  • The Sapphire Reserve offers 125,000 bonus points after spending $6,000 in three months. Earn 8x points on Chase Travel purchases, 4x on direct flight and hotel bookings, 3x on dining.

Benefits include $300 annual travel credit (applies automatically to any travel purchase), $500 in hotel credits for The Edit collection bookings (two $250 credits usable anytime in 2026), plus a one-time $250 credit for select Chase Travel hotels. Total hotel credits: $750 for 2026.

Priority Pass Select membership covers 1,300+ lounges worldwide, Chase Sapphire Lounges include two free guests, and you'll get up to $300 annually in dining credits for Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables. Points transfer to 14 partners including United, Southwest, Hyatt, and Marriott, or redeem through Chase Travel at 1.5x value.

Works for: Frequent travelers comfortable booking through Chase's portal. Requires using hotel credits, dining credits, and lounge access to justify the $795 fee.

  • American Express Platinum Card — $895

  • New cardholders may receive up to 175,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $8,000 in six months. Earn 5x points on flights booked directly or via American Express Travel (up to $500,000 annually) and prepaid hotel bookings.

Access upto 1,550+ airport lounges including Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying Delta, and Priority Pass Select. The benefit structure centers on maximizing credits across categories:

Additional perks include Hilton Gold and Marriott Gold status, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, and comprehensive travel insurance.

Works for: High earners who can systematically capture quarterly credits. Requires shopping at specific retailers and dining at specific restaurants to maximize value.

The catch: At $895, this is the highest annual fee. Missing one quarter of credits means leaving $100-175 on the table.

  • Capital One Venture X — $395

  • The Venture X retains strong value despite lounge policy changes. The $395 fee is offset by a $300 Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles (worth roughly $100).

Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in three months. Get unlimited 2x miles on every purchase, 5x miles on hotels and rental cars through Capital One Travel.

Starting February 1, 2026, lounge access changed significantly. Primary cardholders keep complimentary access to Capital One Lounges, Landings, and 1,300+ Priority Pass lounges, but:

    • Authorized users pay $125 annually for lounge access (up to four users)
    • Guest access at Capital One Lounges costs $45 per adult, $25 per child ages 2-17
    • Guest access at Priority Pass lounges costs $35 per person
    • Spending $75,000+ annually unlocks two complimentary guests at Lounges, one at Landings

Works for: Solo travelers or those hitting $75,000 annual spending. For couples who valued free authorized user access and guest privileges, this card lost significant value February 1.

New reality: If you travel with companions frequently and won't hit $75,000 spending, Sapphire Reserve's two free guests (no spending requirement) delivers better value despite costing $400 more annually.

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred — $95

  • The Sapphire Preferred delivers premium card benefits without requiring quarterly credit tracking. At $95 annually, it's the strongest entry-level option.

Earn 75,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 in three months. Get 5x points on Chase Travel bookings (excluding hotels eligible for the annual credit), 3x on dining including delivery and takeout, 2x on all other travel, 1x on everything else. Offers may vary.

Benefits include a $50 annual hotel credit (reducing effective fee to $45), 10% anniversary bonus on all previous year's spending, free DashPass membership through December 2027 with monthly $10 credits on non-restaurant orders, and travel insurance including trip cancellation coverage and primary rental car insurance.

Points transfer to the same Chase partners as Sapphire Reserve and redeem at 1.25x through Chase Travel versus 1x for cash back.

Works for: Anyone traveling 2-4 times annually who regularly spends on dining. No complicated quarterly credits. No spending thresholds. Just straightforward earning and one annual hotel credit you'll actually use.

  • Bank of America Travel Rewards — $0

  • The Bank of America Travel Rewards delivers value without annual fees. Earn 25,000 bonus points (worth $250 toward travel) after spending $1,000 in 90 days.

Get unlimited 1.5x points on all purchases and 3x points on travel booked through Bank of America Travel Center. The card includes 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers (then 17.49%-27.49% variable), no foreign transaction fees, and mobile wallet integration. Bank of America Preferred Rewards members earn 25-75% bonus points on every purchase.

Works for: Infrequent travelers who want flexibility without fees. Points worth 1 cent each for cash back. No transfer partners means you're locked into their redemption options.

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus — $99 (waived first year)

  • The Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Card works for frequent Southwest flyers. Earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 in three months.

Benefits include one free checked bag (saving $35 each way), 3,000 anniversary points, and 2x points on Southwest purchases. Southwest's Companion Pass—earned through 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year—lets a designated companion fly free (paying only taxes and fees) for the remainder of the year you earn it plus the entire following year.

Works for: Travelers in Southwest's route network flying 3+ roundtrips annually. The free checked bag benefit pays for the annual fee after two roundtrips.

  • How to Choose

  • Stop comparing welcome bonuses. Points matter less than whether you'll use ongoing benefits.

    Three questions:

    1. How do you actually travel? If you fly Southwest exclusively, don't optimize for cards earning points transferable to United. If you stay at Marriott properties only, Hotel Collection credits from Amex provide zero value.

    2. Can you capture the credits? Amex Platinum's $400 Resy credit requires quarterly dining at participating restaurants. Sapphire Reserve's hotel credits require booking through specific portals. If your spending doesn't naturally align, you're paying fees for unused benefits.

    3. What's your breakeven? Sapphire Preferred at $95 beats Venture X at $395 if you're not using lounge access. Amex Platinum's $895 requires capturing at least $900 in credits annually—achievable but not automatic.

The best travel rewards card matches how you already travel, not how marketing departments suggest you should travel. Choose based on your actual spending patterns, not advertised total value you'll never capture.
