The Best Destinations Before Winter Closes In

Right now, a beach in Portugal, a desert resort in Arizona, and a stretch of Caribbean coastline are all having their best weather of the year, at close to their lowest prices of the year, and most travelers haven't noticed. That window is October. It won't last. Once Thanksgiving fares kick in and winter high season resets hotel rates across half these destinations, the deal disappears along with the good weather in some of them.

  • The Booking Window

  • The mechanism is simple. Domestic airfare in the United States drops 25 to 40 percent below August peaks between September 8 and October 24, according tofare tracking data for fall 2026, and international fares to Europe fall even further, 30 to 50 percent below August after Labor Day. That pricing floor holds through late October, then starts climbing again as Thanksgiving demand builds. After October 24, you're paying rising prices for a colder trip.

Caribbean pricing follows its own clock. Fares there drop 20 to 40 percent in October, but that's also still hurricane season, technically. The practical reality is milder: storm formation in October runsless than half of September's rate, and NOAA's 2026 outlook calls for a below-normal season, with forecasters putting the odds at 75 percent. Tuesday and Wednesday departures still run 15 to 30 percent below Friday and Sunday for the same route, on top of whatever the calendar saves you.

Here are six places where October makes sense, because the weather is still good and the crowds are gone, or because the crowds haven't shown up yet.

  • 1. The Algarve, Portugal

  • Daytime highs run73 degrees at the start of October and cool to around 70 by the end, with the sea holding at a swimmable 66 to 67 degrees. Stay on the eastern Algarve, around Faro and Tavira, where conditions run a few degrees warmer and calmer than the wind-exposed west. Boat trips through the Ria Formosa lagoon, past sandbar islands and flamingo colonies, run through the fall without the summer waitlists, andFaro's boat operatorskeep departures going daily. Golf courses across the region also drop their peak-summer green fees while holding onto the mild afternoons that make a full 18 holes tolerable again. Base yourself at the Vila Vita Parc Resort & Spa, a clifftop estate with eight pools and a private beach that thins out considerably once September ends.

  • 2. Sicily, Italy

  • The grape harvest on Mount Etna runs into late October depending on altitude, and wineries around Passopisciaro and Castiglione di Sicilia pour Nerello Mascalese from vines grown in volcanic soil, with tastings and vineyard walks that require a reservation but nothing more formal than that. Daytime temperatures sit in themid-70s, the sea stays swimmable into mid-month, and crowds at theValley of the Templesand Taormina's Greek Theater drop sharply once the cruise-heavy summer clears out. Stay at the NH Collection Taormina, where the rooftop terrace looks straight out over Naxos Bay.

  • 3. Marrakech, Morocco

  • Summer here means triple-digit afternoons that keep sightseeing confined to before 10 a.m., but that changes in October. Highs cool by about ten degrees from the high 80s at the start of the month to the mid-seventies by the end. Evenings drop into the 50s, so pack a layer for the rooftop dinners. TheJardin Majorelle, Yves Saint Laurent's cobalt-blue garden, is manageable at a walking pace instead of a dash between shade patches. The Four Seasons Resort Marrakech keeps a low-key, contemporary compound just outside the medina, with two pools and quick taxi access when you want the souks.

  • 4. Charleston, South Carolina

  • Charleston sits inside hurricane country, so there is some risk, but it is, however, a fraction of what it was in September, and this year's below-normal Atlantic season lowers it further. What's left is a city withhighs easing from the low 80s to the low 70sacross the month, humidity that's finally bearable, and fall foliage settling over the antebellum homes alongthe Battery. Restaurant reservations that required a week's notice in July open up for same-day booking. The Vendue Charleston's Art Hotel, a converted 1780s warehouse in the historic district, has a rooftop bar built for exactly this weather.

  • 5. Scottsdale, Arizona

  • October in Scottsdale sees hotel rates run30 to 40 percent below the winter peak, while the weather has already dropped from summer's triple digits into the mid-80s. Golf courses that book out solid from January through April still have same-week tee times. Mornings are for theDesert Botanical Garden, where 50,000 desert plants are pleasant to walk through while evenings belong to Old Town's restaurant patios – usable again after a summer spent eating indoors. Stay at the Scott Resort & Spa, a boutique property with two pools and an easy walk to the wine trail.

  • 6. Aruba

  • Aruba sits south of the main hurricane belt, so the storms that keep other Caribbean islands' October rates depressed for good reason simply don't threaten this one. Hotel rates still run30 to 50 percent below the December through April peak though, and the ocean is at itswarmest point of the year. However, you will have to contend with brief afternoon showers that clear fast and rarely cost you a beach day. The murals covering San Nicolas, painted over successive editions of the island's annual art fair, are worth an afternoon regardless of the calendar. The adults-only Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort on Eagle Beach keeps the vibe quiet and the sand nearly empty.

  • Locking It In

  • If any of these six are calling to you, this is the week to act on it. Scottsdale and Charleston can still come together on short notice, since domestic fares hold their floor through October 24. The Algarve, Sicily, and Marrakech want faster action, especially for an early-October departure, since Europe's ideal booking window is already ticking down. Set a fare alert through Airfarewatchdog instead of checking prices by hand every few days, and if Aruba is the pick, a credit card with trip interruption coverage covers the same ground aspricier standalone hurricane insurancefor a fraction of the cost.

Once Halloween passes, the math flips. Fares climb toward Thanksgiving, Scottsdale's rates catch up with the snowbird season, and every destination on this list goes back to costing what everyone else already knows it's worth. Book the October trip. Winter can wait.
