A wonderful trip in Morocco!

Author: travellover
Date of Trip: March 2006

Hello travelers,

I went to Morocco in March with my sister and had a fabulous time. We only spent a week, and wish we spent more time as there was so much to do.

Rachid (a tour operator) organised everything, as I had no time to look for hotels or riads (a riad is a traditional Moroccan house). I told him where we wanted to visit, and he arranged accommodations and a 4×4 throughout the trip, plus sightseeing, a desert trip, etc.

We went to Fez, Merzouga, the desert, Ouarzazate, Marrakech, High Atlas Mountains and Essaouira. We managed to do quite a lot in a week.

The desert tour was a fantastic experience, and you can do it after your visit to Fez. The old medina is a must in Fez, but do get a local guide as you will get lost and it’s difficult to know who to trust. There is another place near Fez, Meknes, I think, that I would have loved to visit. Apparently there is a good market there and it’s popular too. From Fez, we drove to the desert with sightseeing stops along the way. We rode the camels into the desert and had dinner (one of the best dinners I had in Morocco). It’s nice if you get there by sunset. In the morning, sunrise at the desert is a wonderful experience and then they serve you breakfast. I strongly recommend the desert trip.

We also went to a Kasbah (but I cannot remember the name of the place!) and the Todra Gorge, which is amazing. The journey between Ouarzazate and Marrakech was breathtaking, so I recommend that too. Do not bother too much with Ouarzazate, as besides the film studios there is not much.

We visited Essaouira, which is a fishing village. We exchanged money in the bank there, and we took Euros with us.

Again, I do suggest a tour operator as it’s very difficult to communicate with the locals unless you speak French.

I hope this gives you a good idea of our trip to Morocco. Enjoy your holiday. Cheers!
