Uruguay Travel Guide: What to Do in Uruguay

Best Time to Go to Uruguay

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere is summer below the equator, so the warmest months in Uruguay are December through February — and this is when hotel rates tend to go up, especially along the coast. Travel any other time of year, including the relatively mild winter, to avoid crowds and save on nightly rates. Uruguay’s Carnaval can last up to 40 days and generally runs from mid to late January through February; book early if you’re traveling during this time period.

Uruguay on a Budget

Uruguay is less of a bargain than you might expect, especially in tourist hot spots such as Punta del Este and Montevideo. Traveling outside the summer high season can help; so can booking a hostel or homestay where you can cook for yourself instead of eating at restaurants. Street food such as hot dogs, hamburgers and empanadas can also save you a few coins.
