Thanksgiving in Grand Cayman

Author: Mary S.
Date of Trip: November 2006

Airfare for two — $900. Hotel — $650. Snorkeling equipment — $100. Spending Thanksgiving in Grand Cayman — PRICELESS!

My girlfriend and I decided at the last minute to spend the holiday somewhere warm –where we could snorkel and just relax. We’ve both been to Grand Cayman so it was a pretty easy decision. (“What do you think about Grand Cayman?” “Sounds good to me.” “Ok, book it!”)

We found a great deal on Spirit and flew biz class round trip. After a slight delay, we had easy flights to Ft. Lauderdale and then on to Grand Cayman. Grabbed our bags, found a taxi and we were on our way.

We were bookedat the Sunshine Suites Hotel, which I highly recommend. Just slightly off the beaten path, right across the street from Seven Mile Beach and the Westin Casuarina Resort. The hotel has two wings, a pool and a wonderful restaurant/bar called the Sunshine Bar and Grill. This was our favorite place to hang out.The bartenders were gracious, articulate and fun, plus they really knew how to make their signature drink, the Sunshine Painkiller. (Delicious and potent!) All drinks were served with a smile and were extremely yummy.

We were treated to a wonderful complimentary breakfast each morning with fresh fruit, muffins, juice, coffee, cereal, breads and more. All meals were wonderful. This is real cuisine, not bar food. From Shrimp Gazpacho to Asian Chicken Salad, Nachos with jerk chicken…it was all great. The front desk staff was also excellent and helped arrange for taxi service. They even helped us with a banking problem, making numerous calls to the states for us.

The room was wonderful with two comfortable queen beds, a kitchen and a good size bathroom. You could open the window and let in the warm Caribbean air!

Snorkeling was wonderful and we took advantage of it all over the island. Shopping in Georgetown was easy as the taxi service is so convenient and covers the whole island. Five Cayman dollars for the two of us.

Nightlife was varied and fun. Friday night disco at the Ritz Carlton and some smaller spots recommended by our bartenders — it was happening!

I can’t think of a bad thing to say about this trip except for having to pack up and leave. It’s a place that’s near and dear to my heart. If you are going to visit Grand Cayman, please stay at the Sunshine Suites Hotel. It comes highly recommended and is the “most fun” place in town!
