Free Service in Spain

Author: Conchy
Date of Trip: September 2015

Just returned from a 3 weeks trip to Spain. Had a wonderful time in Santiago de Compostela, bringing back memories of when my husband and I lived there as newly wed and students. Spent 10 days revisiting all the places: the house where we lived, the buildings where we studied, the cafes we sat for a wine and tapas, the fresh food market, etc, etc. The old city of Santiago is the same as it was 54 years ago, (and since the Middle Ages) and we never visited the new Santiago. But what was new and so good was the way my husband and I were treated as Senior citizens. We flew into Madrid airport and were greeted by very nice. Courteous, polite young men who took us through Inmigration, to pick our suitcases and then customs, in wheel chairs, and carried our suitcases all the way to the national terminal for our flight to Santiago. The left us at the gate for said flight. Same thing in Santiago airport, and in the train stations when we traveled by train within Spain. Pick us up in wheel chairs when we arrived, and took us to the train, or the taxi, after the trip. The only thing is you have to ask for this free service when you buy the tickets.

This service made the difference between an excellent trip and one that could have been a disaster. It enables senior citizens to travel and feel taken care of. And most important, it is done as if we are the most interesting tourists. Thus, we were able to save our strength to walk in the places we visited. And visit places, we did!
