Very Beautiful and Interesting Excursion

Author: Charlene Hoggard
Date of Trip: April 2013

My husband and I did the Western Heritage Tour as one of our excursions on our cruise to Freeport.

Dwaine was our tour guide and he was the best. We got off our ship the Carnival Fantasy in Freeport and was directed to where we were suppose to be picked up. Dwaine then showed us to our ride. It was a nice air-conditioned bus for about 22 passengers. It was a nice ride. As we were riding he would tell us about the places we were seeing. Our first stop was at a brewery where you could go to rest room and buy some beverages if you wanted too. The rest rooms were very clean and I think the prices were reasonable. We did not need anything so we did not make a purchase.

Next stop was the light house. He told us the history of the lighthouse and about the island itself. We got to get out, stretch our legs and take photos. Next we heading to the boiling hole where he pointed out under water caves and again gave some history.

We then preceded to Fern Gully. He parked the bus and there were a few vendors there selling their wares. I did buy a star fish but when I got back to port I saw one just like I had bought and I paid $2.00 more for it. 🙁 So be careful. He lead us down a path that had a lot of vegetation and he pointed out certain plants to tell us their uses. Some were poisonous and some were medicinal. The walk is not too long but if anyone has walking issues this is not a trip for you. He shows us a fresh water hole and a cave where 50 people stayed during a hurricane. We were able to go in the cave and take pictures. Our next stop was the highlight for my husband. He took us to a private beach where they provided snorkeling gear and he led the ones that wanted to snorkel out to a reef. It is a pretty good swim but you had flippers to help the swim easier. My husband saw right many fish and took pictures with the under water camera. They also provide lounge chairs for those who want to just sit on the beach and enjoy the view. There were some people snorkeling in the shallow water and just wading around.

When the snorkelers returned we then had lunch. I chose the conch fritters and my husband had a hamburger. Both were good but my husband thought the conch fritters were the best and wished he had gotten them.

I highly recommend this trip for adults/preteens-teenagers. For those that have children under the age of 7-8 I do not think they would enjoy.
