In a van with a private driver, it’s 220 km or about 140 miles, but it takes about 5 hours to reach Accra. The reasons for that include the state of the road. Some bits have disappeared, so rutted track is what’s left. That’s relatively rare but it slows you down. Next, speed bumps are laid in every village to slow down the traffic. Then there are slow-moving trucks. Police road blocks next – several. Even if you’re waved through, you’ll have slowed down or stopped by then. Often they will want to see the driver/vehicle papers. Last but not least – toll booths. Not many, but again you slow to a stop. There’s a big rest stop about half way on the right that’s ideal for taking a break.

Travel by bus between Kumasi and Accra takes approx 4-5 hours. Main coach companies, like V.I.P., with large vehicles, are normally quicker and a lot more comfortable than the Tro-Tro’s or the ordinary bus services. Price from 30-60 GHC.
