Tips on Republic of Montenegro Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Republic of Montenegro Warnings and Dangers

Stay safe during your stay in Montenegro with these tips.

Roads

Roads in Montenegro can be narrow and winding, particularly in the mountains where roads often have numerous switchbacks. Also, guard rails aren’t always available where you think they should be. In the towns, roads often narrow to a single lane, so be careful when passing other cars – you may need to pull into a driveway or back up to let someone pass. Finally, the roads in Montenegro are not numbered, the signs only specify which town the road goes to. Having a good map is extremely helpful.

The Montenegrin police are notorious for stopping vehicles with foreign plates and levying fines for the most minor of infractions. When driving through Montenegro, always wear your seatbelt and drive with your vehicle’s headlights turned on – even during the day – to avoid fines. In the more heavily traveled areas of Montenegro, you are likely to see a policeman about every 10 km along the side of the road monitoring traffic.

Wildlife

Sea urchins are small, globular, spiny sea creatures that cover much of the sea floor off the coast of Montenegro. You can see them because they only gather in clear water. Wear water shoes while walking through the water. If you snorkel, be careful not to brush up against the urchins on the sides of the rocks.

There are two species of vipers in Montenegro, ”sarka” and ”poskok‘.’ Both are small but very poisonous. Be careful while hiking, watch your step, and remember that they won’t attack people if they are not disturbed.
