Tips on Nicaragua Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Nicaragua Warnings and Dangers

This Central American nation is an ideal place to enjoy two coasts, a thriving city and lush wildlife. Watch the waters and keep an eye on yourself when in the capital. Keep in mind that this is not a rich country and you may be perceived as well off just traveling here from a first world nation. Also be particularly careful along the coast.

Petty Crime

Minor crimes are a problem in this nation such as purse-snatching and other kinds of thieving. Take precautions and you’ll be fine. Keep your belongings close at hand at all times. The streets may have beggars including young children. Do not give people money or they will follow you asking for more money. The police do not consider this a problem and will not respond to you. Some regions that are considered particularly unsafe include neighborhoods such as La Rosita, Bonanza, and Siuna in the northeastern part of the  Jintotega area.

Dangerous Currents

Nicaragua has a coastline on the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Both coasts have oceans with strong currents. Keep careful when you’re swimming even on the more secluded beaches. In some places, swimming is forbidden completely. Heed the warning signs you see indicating where the currents are particularly swift.

Roads and Other Issues

The roads are not always well-maintained. Watch where you walk along the streets as they can be filled with potholes. The same is true of highways. Many highways are not always kept up well. If you are driving a car, bring repair kits with you in the event of a problem with your tires.
