Chincoteague Wild Pony Center
Famous for the wild ponies, on Chincoteague Island you can come see what they are all about. Visit the Beebe Farm Center learn the history of these horses this small island. The modern Pony Penning began in 1924 as an effort to raise money for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and is still held on the last Wednesday and Thursday of July when they swim across the channel. A very popular event.
Chincoteague is the perfect area to rent a kayak and explore the flora and fauna around the islands. Keep an eye out for the wild ponies as you go. You can take a guided tour or get adventurous and go self-guided. You can also walk along the Freshwater Marsh trail, a 1-mile loop that skirts Snow Goose Pool; the birding is great here. Visit the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center to learn more about the region.
Take Time to relax
There are many ways to relax on Chincoteague. Spend time sitting on the beach, play in the surf and ride a wave. Build a sandcastle in the sand and keep an eye out for sand crabs as you dig. You won’t find boardwalks here, just natural beaches as far as you can see. Go on a boat ride, enjoy the breeze and the views, and learn about the eco-culture of the island. Visit a waterfront tiki bar, go fishing, rent a bike, stop for an ice cream or just walk along the beach.
Other places to see include the Assateague Lighthouse, Chincoteague Aquarium, Oyster & Maritime Museum, Refuge Waterfowl Museum and the Assateague Island National Refuge.
