Óbidos, Portugal, has excellent roads and several transportation options available to get you there. The town easily accessible by bus, train or car from Lisbon, but once you’re there, you may want to spend your time walking.

Getting Around by Car

It’s easy to get to Óbidos by car. Lisbon is only  80 to 90 kilometers away and major roads pass through the area. If you choose this type of transportation, pick a smaller car because some of the roads around Óbidos can be very narrow and your car may not be allowed in certain parts of the town. Parking can be difficult in the areas where you can drive, so be sure to bring money for meters and paid lots.

Traveling by Bus or Train

One way to solve the problem of narrow roads and car restrictions in Óbidos is to get there by taking the train or the bus. The train only takes two hours from Lisbon and the station is located a couple kilometers from the town center. You will need to walk uphill from the station. The buses, however, will take you right into the center of town. For an all day activity,  you can take a tour of the monasteries and wineries on your way from Lisbon to Óbidos.

Walking

In some parts of Óbidos, you will have to be prepared to walk as some of the roads are mere passageways too small for cars to fit through. Make sure your shoes are comfortable enough to walk on cobbled sidewalks. You may also find yourself walking up and down hills often. With its slower pace, you may notice things you might not have noticed if you were in a vehicle, such as the way the houses are positioned against the slope of the hills.
