Hampi Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Transportation in Hampi

Hampi is a village and temple that is listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi and getting there takes time and planning. Knowing where the nearest airport, train stations, and other forms of transportation will make visiting more enjoyable.

River Crossing

Transportation can be expensive and river crossing is a fun way to explore the waters, while saving time. It has been said that in order to find the boats that allow tourist to cross the river, if you are in Hampi Bazaar and walk down the road to the ricer past the Gahts that’s where the boats can be found. One report was made that they paid a woman sitting under a tree near baskets/boats and a man paddled the boat across the river, took the boat out of the water and walked away. Locals must take the boat and paddle themselves. Other reports have been made that the boats, which are really big baskets made of tarpaulin, are used to cross the river. Some locals even take their motorboats on the boats to cross the river.

Bikes, Scooters, & Mopeds

Bikes, scooters, and mopeds are available for rent. It would be a good idea to have a Hampi map and tourist guide to get around. The rental place can be found in Hampi Bazaar, by the Virpaksha temple. This is one of the cheaper ways and much less than hiring an auto rickshaw.

Train and Airplane from Bangalore

Another form of transportation that is offered is taking the train from Bangalore to Hospet, which is an overnight ride. Tourists can also take an auto rickshaw from Hospet station to Hampi. It will take a lot of time and planning. The nearest airport is at Bangalore and from there the best option is the Indian Railways Sleeper Train.
