Day Trip to Herculaneum, Sorrento – Insider Tips

Day Trip to Herculaneum

Herculaneum is an easy train ride from Sorrento, and definitely worth a visit if you are in the Amalfi Coast region. From Sorrento, take the Circumvesuviana train to the station at Ercolano, and from there it is about a ten minute walk to the ruins. This ancient city was covered in volcanic mud, rather than ash, which preserved many more types of objects, including fabrics, furniture, and more of the wooden structures than at Pompeii.

Discounted Passes

If you are planning to visit both Herculaneum and Pompeii, or any of the other historical sites in the area, it may make sense to purchase a discount pass. Three day passes, providing entrance to all five sites, are available for 20.00 Euros when purchased ahead of time. A trip to both Pompeii and Herculaneum makes for a perfect full-day of exploration.

Beware the Heat

There is little shade in the ruin areas, and it is advised that visitors bring water and a hat. Consider these suggestions to be must-dos during the hot and sunny summer months. The sun and the heat can get brutal! Light colored and breathable fabrics are recommended over heavy clothing, along with sturdy shoes.

Guide or no Guide?

Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum is a relatively small area, and at only 4.5 hectares, and easier to navigate on one’s own. With or without a guide, this is one spot that will be enjoyable and informative, whichever option you choose. The area is much more compressed and the structures and objects of interest are very well preserved and mostly self-explanatory.
