Basel Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Basel Things to Do

Basel, Switzerland is an interesting place to visit and there many delightful surprises in this ancient town.

Kunstmuseum

Founded in 1662, the Kunstmuseum Basel owns and exhibits the most extensive art collection located in Switzerland. Among the most important works of art are several medieval paintings of the Holbein Family and a wide selection of classic Swiss painters like Johann Füssli, Ferdinand Hodler and Arnold Böcklin.

The Dreiländereck

Meaning the “three countries corner” if translated, it is exactly what it is named. This is the point where Switzerland, Germany and France join together. The exact spot would be underwater in the river Rhine (Rhein), but there is a marker located on the wharf. This is a popular spot for tourists to take photos.

Muenster Cathedral

The Baseler Münster (cathedral) is the main church of the area, built from red sandstone between 1019 and 1500. The front of the Münster is decorated with statues of St. Georg and St. Martin; inside there are many beautiful stained-glass windows, a magnificent altarpiece and medieval sculptures. The Cathedral tower offers a great panoramic view of Basel.

Basel Rathaus

The town hall is very red with detailed murals on the front facade. The building was erected in two time periods, the front part, with the arcades, constructed from 1504 to 1514, while the tower was built from 1899 to 1901. Town hall tours are available Thursday at 6pm.

Zoo Basel

The zoo is located in the  center of the city, and although relatively small, it is one of the most important zoos in Europe, showcasing many rare and interesting species.
