Tips on Split Warnings and Dangers – Stay Safe!

Split Warnings and Dangers

Known for its sandy beaches, mountains, the Adriatic Sea, museums and Roman ruins, Split also features nightclubs, galleries and Diocletian’s Palace. However, you still need to know about a few dangers in Split.

Respect the Local People and their Customs

Do not say any harsh words against the city’s patron saint, St. Doimus. Do not say anything negative about the local football club. Never offer cooking lessons, especially about how to cook seafood.

Watch Your Step at Night

Featuring narrow streets and hidden alcoves, take extra safety precautions when going for a stroll in the evening.

Stone Streets are Slippery when Wet

The smooth stones in Old Town can cause you to slide when they are wet. Wear shoes with durable heels if you plan to walk in this area on a rainy day or night.

Another Reason To Walk at Night With a Friend

Old Town is not always populated at night. If you must visit the area in the evening hours, take a friend or two with you. Avoid using an ATM at night or you may find yourself surrounded by thieves.

Do Not Put Your Shoes on Bus or Train Seats

This may sound funny, but the bus-train conductors do not want you to place the soles of your shoes on the seats. Also, avoid dropping things on the clean floor. Make sure you are in your seat at departure time.  Otherwise, the punctual coach drivers may leave you stranded. The drivers do not speak English. You need to estimate the amount of time until the vehicle departs.
