Things to Do in Steubenville, Ohio

Steubenville Things to Do

Steubenville is filled with history and there are many landmarks and buildings to explore.

Visit Churches

If you love church architecture, Steubenville has several fine ones. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (1792) is the oldest congregation in town and in the state; built of locally quarried sandstone. The First Westminster Presbyterian Church is the largest church in downtown Steubenville and has impressive twin gothic towers. The First United Presbyterian Church possesses outstanding stain glass windows, stone ornamentation and interesting doors (these two Presbyterian churches are now merged). St. Peter’s Catholic Cathedral, dates back to 1832 but the current church was built in 1905. It is French Renaissance style; the interior altar and dome are worth a peek.

Learn About Fort Steuben

The frontier fort was originally built as a defense in 1787 and it housed soldiers of the 1st Regiment of the U.S. Army. The restored version of the old fort has corner markers showing the location of the original stockade above the Ohio River. The recreated stockade is expertly crafted, and there’s a museum. Open seasonally (May–October).

See the Murals and Edwin M. Stanton Statue

The city has had a problem of blackened building walls from local coal burning, so they’ve cleaned and covered city buildings’ walls with murals. The mural themes reflect the history of the town and individual artworks show its building’s original purpose. In front of the Jefferson County Court House (an architectural gem itself) is a large bronze statue of Edwin M. Stanton, a native of Steubenville who served in many government offices but was most famous for serving as Abraham Lincoln’s Attorney General and, later, Secretary of War.

To get great views of the city and river take the stairways and trails from downtown to the upper hill residencies. There are some of the finest and most interesting houses here too.
