Things to Do in Northam, Australia

Northam Things to Do

Northam is a town in Western Australia that is relatively small. Although it’s not an extremely populated area, there is still plenty of things to do when visiting the region.

History

Northam is said to have the largest number of historic buildings in Western Australia outside of Fremantle. There is a 90-minute walk you can take, and guests can pick up a map provided by the Tourist Centre. The starting point of the walk is at the Avon Valley Visitors Centre, on Grey Street.

There are many historic buildings to see. Byfield House was built in 1902 for an important resident of Northam: James Byfield. The home displays the wealth that was acquired by Byfield as a direct result of the gold boom era. You can also visit the first post office ever built in Northram. The old post office houses a large display of arts and crafts and touring exhibitions. Another location to stop at is the old Union Bank Building, whcih was built in 1905 and is now the home of the ANZ bank. One of Northam’s unique historical buildings, it features a gabled roof, decorative moldings, and arched head windows.

Nature

Bernard Park is adjacent to the Avon Valley Visitor Centre and on the shores of the Avon River. There is a children’s playground, barbeque and picnic facilities, and many large sculptures. The rotunda in the park was built in 1915. You can also visit the Avon River, a beautiful feature in the Avon Valley that runs its course through Northam.
