Sacramento Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Sacramento Warnings and Dangers

California’s lively capitol city is a great place to explore history, spend time in nature, and experience a diverse culture. Whether you’re traveling to Sacramento for business or pleasure, here are tips to travel safely.

Homelessness and Crime

The tourist areas of Sacramento are largely safe, but you’ll want to use street smarts downtown. Downtown Sacramento has some crime, especially at night after the working population leaves and the area empties out.

Be careful parking your car downtown, where thefts are high. Don’t park it where there’s broken glass, and leave nothing visible in your car. Avoid locking your bicyle outside, too.

Downtown has a high homeless population that struggles with addiction, especially if you’re walking on K Street downtown and around gas stations. The homeless almost never cause serious problems; use common sense and avoid engaging in conversation.

Areas to Avoid

Some areas surrounding the safer Downtown and Midtown areas are dangerous, and you’ll want to be careful not to accidentally walk around in them. In particular, avoid the Oak Park neighborhood. South Sacramento is far from downtown but another high crime neighborhood.

Extreme Weather

Summer in Sacramento is extremely hot, with poor air quality. Swimming at the water park or Delta River will help you cool off. The Delta River is often quite cold, around 45 degrees, so take precautions to avoid hypothemia. Beware of currents, debris, and nearby boats.

In winter, be careful when you drive, as frequent foggy weather causes poor visibility conditions.
