Puri Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Insider Tips

Puri Shopping

Puri is a great place to shop for saris and other textiles. It is also a great spot to pick up some unique souvenirs and knickknacks. The village is small, but home to many weavers and other artisanal craftspeople.

Jagannath Figures

At the very end of the Grand Road outside the Jagannath Temple, there are several stalls selling these colorful figures. The  figures represent Jagannath (black face with large white eyes), and his brother Balbhadra (white face and arms) and sister Subhadra (no arms). They all have huge, all-seeing eyes and outstretched arms to protect and bless all mankind. These are wonderful trinkets to take home as a memento of your visit, or as a gift for someone else.

Saris and Other Clothing

You can buy good cotton and silk saris in Puri around the Temple Road. There are various Government Emporiums, but do be aware that  many of which could be fake. At the government emporiums, and the other local shops, you will find many varieties of cotton saris, cloth materials, dupattas, and a few ready-made garments. They are very unique and colorful, and also very cool under the hot sun. You may also find various religious items which, even if you do not buy, their stalls are very interesting to browse through.
Be on the lookout for the local handicraft items from Raghurajpur or Pipli, as these are of high quality and less likely to be fake. The prices may not differ much, but you will find a lot of varieties at these places, and interacting with the local craftspeople is a very rewarding experience.
