Octopus Card, Hong Kong – Transportation

Transportation in Hong Kong: Octopus Card

Don’t even think about visiting Hong Kong without getting an Octopus Card. The card is usable for not only public transportation but also at stores, supermarkets, car parks and much more.

Buying It

Octopus Cards are sold at various locations throughout the city. The best way to purchase one would be on arrival at Hong Kong International Airport at several MTR Airport Express Customer Service Counters in the buffer halls so you can hop right on the Airport Express train. You can also purchase the card at retail shops that have the Octopus logo but they must be purchased with cash. There are many different types of Octopus Card so choose the one that’s right for your trip. You will have to put down a deposit for the card which you’ll be able to get back at the end of your trip.

Using It

The card uses a touch and go system which makes taking public transportation that much easier. When using the MTR you will need to swipe your Octopus card against the reader at the turnstile of both your departure and arrival station. If you’re taking the tram you only need to swipe your card when you’re getting off. For the bus just swipe your card when you get on and you’ll be charged a flat fare regardless of how far you go.

The Octopus Card offers many conveniences like the simple fact that you don’t have to carry around coins or worry about having exact change for transportation. On top of that, you’ll end up saving a little bit depending on how much you travel around Hong Kong.
