Malaysia Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus, and Airport Tips

Malaysia Transportation

A modern rail system, excellent roads, low-cost buses, and an extensive ferry system make getting around Malaysia an easy task.

Trains

Most cities in Malaysia have some combination of a monorail, light rail, or KTM Komuter trains. They’re fast, comfortable, and reasonably priced. The Kuala Lumpur Monorail has 11 elevated stations and stops at a number of tourist destinations. Kuala Lumpur also has an extensive and low-cost light rail system. From Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Rail Malaysia runs several trains daily. The famous Jungle Train between Wakaf Baharu and Kuala Lipis starts at 4 AM and leaves several times a day.

Bus Service

Comfortable and air-conditioned buses run between all major towns in Malaysia. In Kuala Lumpur, the inexpensive Skybus comes every thirty minutes and shuttles travelers from the airport to downtown in about an hour, depending on traffic. The Borneo Express leaves from City Park every day at 7.45 AM and stops in Brunei before heading on to Miri. The trip takes about ten hours. The Jesselton Express to Brunei leaves City Park at 8 AM every day. Penang offers tourists a hop on hop off bus that comes about every thirty minutes. In Penang, the city runs free shuttle service to historical sites.

Ferries

A ferry runs between Kota Kinabalu and Gayana Island several times a day. A fleet of eight ferries links Georgetown, Penang Island, and Butterworth on the mainland. Also in Penang, an 8:30 AM ferry operates daily to Langkawi and takes about two and a half hours.
