Kaohsiung Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus and Airport Tips

Kaohsiung Transportation

Read these tips to get the most out of your travel time in Kaohsiung.

Metro aka KRTC

A good way to get around is the metro. It is easy to navigate with only 2 lines and a very self explanatory ticket machine that accepts coins and notes. The stations are safe, clean and beautifully decorated. You can even travel to the airport from a station.

Rent a Bicycle

There’s a good bicycle system in place around the Kaohsiung, with separate lanes for cycles in many places. City traffic isn’t very bad so you feel very safe as you travel in the fresh air.

Go By Foot

If you are handicapped or have mobility problems then one place to consider visiting would be the Go Guang Shan Temple. Although the temple is on a hill and has many steps, there are gentle uphill paths. You can also visit one of the many parks that have lovely scenic views and are devoid of steps.

Take a Taxi

Taxis are generally cheaper than a guided tour and you can split the cost with other passengers or friends. At the port there are usually a lot of taxis waiting for tourists, so you won’t have to wait for one. Private taxis often do tours for a fixed price. You can get information, maps and even tents at the entrance then hop in a cab after planning your own tour route.

By Rail

Air-conditioned electric trams run hourly from Taipei to Kaohsiung. Tickets can be purchased at the main railway station or at a major hotel. Children 3 and under travel for free, and kids aged 3-13 are half price. This makes the railway a cheap and comfortable way to get around.
