Island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik, Croatia, Insider Tips

Things to do in Dubrovnik: The Island of Lokrum

The island of Lokrum is just a short, 10-minute, boat ride from the harbor area at Dubrovnik. There are many small islands in this area to explore and Lokrum is one of the nicest ones.

Botanical Gardens

This is a wonderful place to visit that is beautiful and relaxing. It is not as well-maintained like a city park might be, since it is allowed to grow wildly in a natural way. Yet, there are pleasant hiking paths and many varieties of plants that thrive in this climate, which were brought from all over the world.

Beautiful peacocks wander around the Botanical Garden on Lokrum. The female peacocks are a dull, gray-brown. It is the male peacocks that are resplendent with their colorful large feathers. If you hear a sound that is like a woman crying out for help that is just the sound of the male peacock’s mating call.

Ruins of Fort Royal Castle Fortress

Fort Royal Castle sits atop a hill overlooking the sea. The walk up the hill is quite steep and raises a sweat for those who attempt it. There is a funny thing to see when reaching the top. It is on top of the island, on top of the hill, on top of the fort, and on top of a little circular platform. Someone placed a deck chair there with a sunshade, a small transistor radio, and a bottle of ice cold water that looks as if it is still dripping with cool condensation. They placed this “art installation” there with no way of getting to it as a prank to tease the hot, sweaty, tourists that visit.

Monastery

In the middle of the island, there is a monastery with a nice garden that is being restored.

Beaches

There are no sand beaches on the island of Lokrum. The beaches are rocky. Nevertheless, there are ample opportunities to get your feet wet and the entry paths are easy to navigate to get to nice coves for swimming. There is a nude beach on the southern side of the island for those who like to swim and sunbathe au naturel.
