Getting Around Pompeii – Car, Train, Bus & Taxi

Pompeii Transportation

The ruins of Pompeii remains a stunning place to visit while you are touring in Italy. While there are limited hotel and restaurant options in the village, there are plenty of ways to travel to and from the site and be able to return to your hotel in Salerno or Naples by evening. We’ve got some simple suggestions for you to choose from.

Bus Tours

Many hotels around Naples offer half and whole-day guided  bus tours to Pompeii and the Sorrentine peninula. Ask your concierge for prices, times and details. You won’t have time to explore on your own, but for a fairly low price (60 euros or so) your day’s entertainment and snacks are already taken care of.

Take the Train

The Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento train includes the Pompeii Villa dei Misteri stop, which is just a 20 minute walk from the ruins. With departure times throughout the day, you set your schedule to explore the amphitheater, enjoy scenery, and take in a demonstration.  Bring a lunch and take time for a picnic under the hot Italian sun. It is a 40 minute ride from Naples to Pompeii, so remember to build in the travel time to your day.

Drive and Park

If you have a rental car, the entrance to the site can be clogged with tourists at the start of the day. While there is a large car park, it’s a bit like navigating rush hour traffic back home. However, if you park near Piazza Anfiteatro you can find metered street parking and a little used entrance to the attraction. Take your sweet time enjoying the day and when it’s time to head back, you avoid the crowds doing the same at the main entrance.
