Getting Around Hakkaido – Car, Train, Bus & Taxi

Hokkaido Transportation

Hokkaido is a vast landscape that is not as densely populated as the mainland. Traveling by train or bus is a great way to enjoy the scenery and its flora and fauna.

Train

Train travel is quickest and most economical method of travel here. Buy a 3-day pass if you’re traveling around Hokkaido.

Taking the kaisoku train is the most logical way to get to Sapporo from the New Chitose Airport. It gets you to Sapporo station in 36 minutes, and there is a train leaving every 15 minutes.

Traveling by train is the best option to get to Otaru from Sapporo, and it takes just 30 minutes. Trains are very frequent, departing a couple of times an hour.

Norokko lines that travel between and around Furano and Biei. During the lavender season, they even set up a temporary station called Lavender Field which is just a 7 minute walk from Farm Tomita. If you have the Furano/Biei Tour Pass, you don’t have to pay to ride this train.

Bus

While Hokkaido’s train network is not very extensive, the buses go everywhere. It’s the best way to travel around Hokkaido, explore its many smaller cities and towns, and visit scenic attractions. Buses are also a cheaper way to travel, and you get to enjoy the many surprises waiting along Hokkaido’s backroads. It isn’t difficult to travel by bus in Hokkaido, just go to the bus station and ask about going to your next destination. Usually, the station masters are extremely helpful, and the buses are always on time and comfortable.

The Twinkle Bus is a sightseeing bus that picks you up at the Biei station and takes you around famous spots in Biei. You can take the Hills Course or the Art Road Course. This bus is included with the Furano/Biei Tour Pass.
