Fun Things To Do in Northumberland – Attractions & Must See

Northumberland Things to Do

Northumberland is a county in England that borders the North Sea. With a history stretching into ancient times, this is a place offers many attractions to visit and historic sites to see.

Visit Ancient Sites

Many visitors often take the time to visit Berwick Castle. Built in the 12th century, few castles can have seen as much military action and changed hands as frequently as Berwick. Over the centuries that England and Scotland were in conflict, the castle was a key objective for the armies of both nations. Today, the main surviving remnant is the White Wall that descends from the railway to the banks of the River Tweed.

Another ancient site to visit is Hadrian’s Wall. This wall is also known as Roman Wall, and it once stretched for 73 miles from the eastern to western coast of the country. Today, you can visit the wall and surrounding sites, including ancient forts and homes.

Finally, there is also Bamburgh Castle, which is one of the finest of all the castles in England. It sits high up on a huge basalt rock face and looks out onto the North Sea. Today, it remains in use by Lord Armstrong’s family.

Gardens

The Alnwick Garden is maintained by the Duchess of Northumberland and features a rose garden, a maze of bamboo trees, and a serpent garden. Another garden that draws visitors is the Craigside Gardens that are grown around Craigside House, a mansion in the region.
