Civitavecchia Transportation – Taxi, Truck, Bus & Airport Tips

Civitavecchia Transportation

Just west of Rome, the coastal city of Civitavecchia serves as the international port for visitors from around the world. Whether you are looking to stay in Civitavecchia for a while or simply passing through, here are some transportation tips to help you make the most of your trip.

The Port of Civitavecchia

Much as Fiumicino serves as the international airport for the city of Rome, Civitavecchia serves as its international seaport. If you are taking a cruise to or from Rome, this is where you will be, approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) from Rome. While you are there, be aware that the port is dangerous to travel on foot, due to heavy traffic and a lack of pedestrian walkways. Your cruise ship may provide shuttle service, but if not, look for the free shuttle sign.

Civitavecchia Train Station

Located within easy walking distance of the port, Civitavecchia Station provides easy access to Rome and to the rest of Italy. Trains are generally affordable, with the high-speed lines slightly more expensive. If you know your dates and travel times in advance, consider booking ahead on the Trenitalia website. Note that the Rome travel pass does not cover the train from Civitavecchia.

Shuttles to Rome and Fiumicino

While trains are slightly cheaper, shuttles are much more convenient, especially if you have a lot of luggage. Schedule ahead of time to have a shuttle pick you up or drop you off directly at the port. Note that apart from train or shuttle service, the only other option will be a very long and very expensive cab ride. When it comes to Civitavecchia transportation, it pays to plan ahead.
