Transportation in Bilbao: Airport
Travelling to Bilbao anytime soon and wondering your best options for getting there and then getting around while in town? The following transportation tips should help you out:
Airport Bus into Bilbao
The green airport bus departs from outside the airport arrivals area going into Bilbao every 30 minutes. It has four stops. Many hotels are located near the stops. It is a small enough city to walk, if you do your homework before you leave, it could help you save money and time waiting for other forms of transport. Tickets are one way only and a flat rate regardless of which stop you exit.
The bus departs from immediately outside the airport arrivals area. It stops on Alameda Rekalde (close to the Guggenheim Museum), Plaza Moyua, Gran Via (just before Plaza Sagrado Corazon) and finishes its journey at the Termibus station in the San Mames area of the city.
Take the Bizkaibus to and from the airport
A simple and cheap way to get to and from the centre of Bilboa from the airport is to take the Bizkaibus.
The local buses are found just outside of the arrivals hall. The bus takes about 20 minutes to get into the centre and you get a nice view of the Guggenheim Museum as you come over the bridge. It cost me 1.30 Euros, in March 2012, and I jumped off at Plaza Moyua, although the full journey is to the bus terminal.
Satansted to Bilbao
Flights are available from Stansted to Bilbao. Hooray for budget airlines! The flight leaves very early from Satansted (before 7 o’clock last time I went!) and only takes an hour and a half maximum! Bilbao airport is small but has an excellent bar/cafe! Alas, I always have a beer or four whenever I leave an airport… it’s only proper!
