Zaanse Schans Transportation

There are a variety of ways to get to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam, they are all relatively easy and inexpensive.

By Bus

Traveling by bus to Zaanse Schans takes a bit longer than other methods, but you may also see sights you wouldn’t see otherwise. Buses depart from Amsterdam Central Station every 15 minutes to Zaanse Schans and it takes approximately 40 minutes to get there. You can purchase a day ticket for 1 euros for Bus 391 to Zaanse Schans. It’s recommended to also purchase the “Zaanse Schans Card” which entitles you to free entry into all of the museums of the village during the visit.

Many hotels and river cruises in the vicinity also offer bus trips to Zaanse Schans. The river cruise ship Arosa Silva has a four hour bus tour that includes a walk through Zaanse Schans and a stop in Edam. This trip also included a visit to a shoe production company where visitors can watch how clogs are made as well as a stop at a cheese production facility. Guests will also have some free time to wander about on their own.

By Train

Taking the train from Amsterdam Central Station to Koog Zaandijk will take about 17 minutes. Koog Zaandijk is the closest station to Zaanse Schans, once you arrive at the station you’ll have an approximately 15-minute walk to get to the open-air museum. Between April and October, you can also utilize a bike taxi which will pick you up at the railway station at Koog Zaandijk and take you to Zaanse Schans. The bike taxi’s usually run between 10-12 in the morning and 14-16 in the afternoon. If you need the service at another time, call 0031-622503234 for reservations.

For your convenience, purchase your return ticket at Amsterdam Central Station when you purchase your departure ticket.

By Car

From Amsterdam, take the A10 Amsterdam ring toward Zaanstad. Take A8 and A7 to direction Purmerend. That the exit for Zaanse Schans and follow the signs then turn right at the roundabout for the car park.

If you drive to Zaanse Schans, you will find that there is adequate parking and the fees are used to maintain the historic buildings.
