Tips on New Caledonia Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

New Caledonia Warnings and Dangers

New Caledonia is located in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean and is full of fauna and flora specimens that descended from ancient species dating back to the time when the island was still connected to the super-continent called Gondwana. Here are some warnings and dangers you should be aware of if you are going to make the trip to New Caledonia.

Public Restroom Facilities

A part of the shock of visiting a south Pacific island often happens when one has to use the public toilets. The toilets here are basically rustic market stalls. It isn’t like in Europe, where you can find a bar or cafe to use instead of a public toilet because there aren’t really any bars or cafes here.

Stray Dogs

One thing you will notice is the number of stray dogs that congregate at places frequented by tourists, particularly where they think they can get some food like the beaches areas. New Caledonia is generally considered to be rabies free, but medical professionals advise that if an animal (not just dogs) bites or scratches you, you should clean the wound with large amounts of soap and water and contact local health authorities immediately. If you came on a cruise ship, you should get back to the ship and see the ship’s doctor as soon as you can.

Sea Snakes

Watch out for sea snakes when snorkeling or swimming, they seem to be abundant in most places on New Caledonia. They are not aggressive but can give a lethal bite if they feel threatened. You should also know that there aren’t any anti-venom medications in New Caledonia, so keep your distance from the snakes.
