A small medieval town in the heart of Tuscany, San Gimignano is famous for dozens of towers that are still standing after many centuries. Shop for fresh produce and locally made wine as well as mosaics.

Street Markets 

Thursday is market day in San Gimignano. Head to the center of town to enjoy fresh produce from the area’s farms. Look for Italian specialties such as crunchy green cardoons, white eggplant and the carciofi or Italian eggplant. This is also when locals do much of their shopping. In addition to fresh produce and you’ll also find many prepared goods in the area as well. Expertly fried vegetables are a regional specialty and make a great snack.

Regional Products 

Look for the crisp Vernaccia di San Gimignano. It’s a local white wine with undertones of honey and the area’s herbs. Pair the wine with slices of  wild boar sausage. The spicy sausage makes a nice contrast with some homemade crackers and local ricotta cheese. If you have a kitchen in your hotel, look for homemade pasta you can bring back and use with some olive oil and sliced tomatoes.

Other Products 

San Gimignano is also a center for other kinds of handcrafted items. This is the place to head for to locate some of the most famous ceramics in Italy. There’s a series of shops clustered along the Via San Giovanni. The via has several outlets where you can find colorful items in intricate patterns. Shop for detailed mosaics and small items.
