Nijmegen Things to Do
Nijmegen is a city in the Netherlands that is close to the German border, and there are plenty of things to do if you love history. You’ll find that many of the attractions and must-see areas can teach you a lot about the culture of the people both then and now.
The Grote Markt in Nijmegen
In the old Nijmegen part of town, you’ll find the Grote Markt. Different vendors sell their wares during the day, and you can buy everything from sunglasses to produce. You can also discover restaurants to enjoy at night, and plenty of architectural accomplishments in the traditional Dutch style. Both the homes and the businesses reflect the classic blending of Renaissance and Baroque that makes the city so visually appealing. Check out the statue of Mariken van Nieumeghen, a local legend, located in the square as well.
Museums and Monuments
There are plenty of museums and monuments to be found around the city. The Velorama National Bicycle Museum is an excellent place to learn more about the progression of how bicycles were made in the country, and the obsession that caused it to become a huge fad. The love of bicycles is still every bit as alive today as it remains one of the most beloved forms of transportation. The National Liberation Museum gives more information about the country’s role in World War II, and Valkhof Museum is full of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts from archeological digs during Roman Times. The Museum De Stratemakerstoren is located in a 16th century defense tower, and the location alone makes it a fun thing to do for kids and adults.
