Montreal Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Montreal Transportation

Located in the French-speaking portion of Canada, Montreal is a city rich with culture and character. Getting to, from, and around Montreal is simple and painless, using these resources.

Metro, Bus and Other Public Transit

Montreal’s Metro system, called la Societe de Transport, compares quite favorably with the ones in New York, London, or Paris. The metro is conveniently located at many of the main tourist sights, such as the Biodome, and has very affordable ticket prices. The STM buses run all over Montreal and beyond the metro lines: some even at night, though not as often as during the daytime. The Gare Centrale is Montreal’s main railway station and Canada’s busiest. Trains run from here to all over the country, and while busy it is very well organized.

Flying In and Out of Montreal

Montreal has two airports, Miribel and Dorval: one for international flights, and the other for domestic. It is recommended that you try and fly into Dorval, not Mirabel, as it is much easier. Also, Train service by ViA rail or Amtrak will bring you right downtown, and bus passes cover the fare for airport buses as well as city buses.

Montreal by Bicycle and Carriage

Bixi is a bike share/rental service with bike stations scattered all over the city. It’s accessible to everyone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, three seasons of the year, from April to November. A special way to explore Old-Montréal is by horse drawn carriage , locally known as “calèche”. You can catch a ride in front of the Notre Dame Cathdral at Rue Notre Dame and St. Sulpice.
