Lions Park, Johannesburg, Insider Tips

Things to Do in Johannesburg: Lions Park

Lion Park, just north of Johannesburg and 40 minutes from Melville, is an enclosed 1500-acre conservation land home to South African wildlife. There are many things to do in Lions Park from photographing the lions and feeding the giraffes to enjoying the amusement park and eating great food.

Lion Camps

For the best photographs, visit the lion camps with a tour guide. You can drive your own car through the camp. When driving, keep your windows rolled up. Remember these are wild animals. The tour offers more interaction opportunities with the lions and other animals, like the cheetahs.

Sunday at noon is the most popular time to visit because this is when the lions feed. Visitors get close-up views of the animals while they eat. You’ll get to experience the animal kingdom hierarchy. It helps to go with a guide during this time.

Cubs World

One of the best things to do at the Lion Park is playing with the cute lion cubs. Listen to the guide’s advice and only touch a cub’s body. They are very playful and like swiping at your pant legs.

Other Animals

At the Lion Park, you will also get to feed Purdy and Gambit, the two giraffes who live at the park. On a guided tour, you’ll pass animal herds including blesbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, and the springboks (South Africa’s national animal).
