If you’re looking for something recreational, there’s plenty of surfing, biking, kayaking and golf opportunities. Or maybe you would prefer to go on a dolphin safari? How about taking a stroll down Lagos’ streets to go shopping and soak up the local atmosphere. But if you want to immerse yourself in Lagos’ rich history, go visit:

  • Forte da Ponta da Bandeira – A small military fortress built between 1680 and 1690 to defend Lagos from attack.
  • Mercado de Escravos – Built in 1444, this is where Europe’s first slave markets were held.
  • Old city walls – These defensive walls and bastions are still intact and are said to date back to the 1500s. Some believe it’s possible these wall lines also represent boundaries from earlier eras, perhaps Medieval or Roman.
  • Churches – Igreja de Santo Antonio and Igreja de Santa Maria.

If you go down to the marina at Lagos there is a road train that will take you to the Grotto cave area and you can get off at various points. Also, there are small boats you can take to go visit the sandy beaches enclosed by red rock formations to the famous Punta de Piedade, the Southern edge of Lagos and the Algarve.
