Kolkata (Calcutta) – Unusual Attractions & Day Trips

Kolkata (Calcutta) Off the Beaten Path

Kolkata is a densely populated area in India. It is well known for its diverse culture, music, restaurants and historical places. Aside from the popular tourist spots, there are many locations off the beaten path that are worthy of attention.

Sample the History of the Region

Located along some of the more remote parts of the city you can find a plethora of Mosques, museums and other historical places. The tombs at St. John’s Churchyard in the heart of the city houses many rich and famous British. The Muslim corner near Bangbasi College is also a less traveled path for tourists. Locals, especially the children, find westerners a novelty. So much so you may be asked for an autograph.

Sunderbans Tiger Reserve

Located close to the Mangrove forests, the tiger reserve is the largest Mangrove ecosystem on the planet. Take a boat through the creeks and keep your eyes peeled for a Bengal tiger. In the process, you can see a variety of birds and other wildlife and be sure to ask the locals about the mystery and legends that surrounds the area. If you like to convene with nature, you can stay at one of the various camps in a cottage or tent.

Enjoy a Hot Beverage

If you’ve never sampled a fresh cup of India’s tea or coffee, you should make it a point to stop at one of the tea-stalls across from the Mosque of Bandel or at the Coffee House on College Street. You will always find a crowd, but it is definitely worth the wait. You can also sample a few authentic menu items or partake in conversation with the locals.
