Hobart Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Hobart Things to Do

Visitors to Hobart enjoy the history and beauty that is found in and around the city. From shopping to mountain climbing, there’s never a shortage of things to see or do.

Salamanca Place

Salamanca Place is a row of old sandstone warehouses along the waterfront. This area was once the business headquarters for Hobart’s wealthy merchants but the whole area fell into disrepair until the late 1960s. A group of artists turned one of the warehouses into a working space and a revival soon followed. Today, Salamanca Place is the spiritual home of Hobart’s creative community and is lined with galleries, cafés and restaurants.

Salamanca Market

Located in Salamanca Place, this market is said to be the biggest of its kind in Australia. It takes place on Saturdays and, if you’re a shopaholic, you’re in for the time of your life. Worm your way through the labyrinth of stalls selling anything and everything. Lots of food here too!

Gardens/Parks/Mountains

In Hobart and its suburban areas there are numerous parks and gardens to explore.

  • Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens – Established in 1818 and open to the public free of charge.
  • Bonarong Wildlife – An animal sanctuary for the care of sick and injured wildlife.
  • Seven Mile Beach – Great to stroll along the sand or enjoy a picnic.
  • Parliament House Gardens – Showcasing many old trees, this is next to Salamanca.

Many tourists report visiting the local mountains is a great outing. Climb the iconic Mt. Wellington and reach 4,170 feet (about 1,270 meters) above sea level. There is a park which is a popular place for rock climbing, cycling and bushwalking. Mt. Nelson provides fantastic views of Hobart. There is an 1811 signal station here and a teahouse.

Other things to see are Arthur Circus, Bruny Island or go on a brewery or confection tour. If you’re looking for excitement, go visit Port Arthur and take a ghost tour. There is plenty to do in Hobart’s suburbs too.
