Cairns – What to Pack – Clothing and Supplies Tips

Cairns What to Pack

A fun, lively city with lots to do, Cairns is more than just the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. To maximize your trip, follow these packing tips and tricks from locals and tourists.

Pack For Summer Weather and Sun All Year

You can expect hot weather year round in Cairns’ tropical climate, even during the winter months. Pack the clothing you’d wear in any hot, humid destination such as shorts, t-shirts and tank tops, flip flops, and a bathing suit. Take outfits for going out, but clothing at restaurants and nightlife is usually casual. Bring a light rain jacket in wet season. Always have a full water bottle when you walk around, and avoid carrying much.

The bright sun causes many painful sunburns for unprepared tourists. Plan to wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen at all times.

Be Prepared For Insects

The humid summer months (November – April) in particular attract a large number of mosquitos. To avoid itchy and uncomfortable bites, bring bug repellent and reapply it several times a day.

Great Barrier Reef Gear

Most tourists spend at least a day in the great barrier reef. Unless your touring company provides them, pack a mask and snorkel, wet suit, and sturdy swimming suit. An underwater camera is great for photos.

Special Equipment for Hikers and Fishing

If you’re going hiking or fishing, along with basic gear, be sure to pack sturdy sneakers, safety and emergency equipment, and large bottles of water. Bring a fish measuring ruler to make sure you comply with legal limits.
